Coach Fred Stengel
Coach Fred Stengel has concluded his 21st year as
the Head Football Coach at Bergen Catholic H.S. with a career record
of 184-46. He put together a record of 99-10 between 1990 and 1999,
which made Bergen Catholic the most winning football program in the
state of New Jersey for the decade of the 90’s.
Coach Stengel has
led the Crusaders
into the state playoffs for 20 consecutive seasons, with 24
playoff victories and 9 State Championships. Three of his teams were
undefeated: 1991, 1992, and 1998. The undefeated 1992 team's championship game with Paramus Catholic, which Bergen won
44-34, was voted Game of the Century by the Bergen Record. The 1998
team was 12-0, #1 in New Jersey, #9 in USA Today national poll, and
was voted Team of the Century by the Bergen Record. The 2004 State
Championship team was ranked #1 in the NY/NJ/CONN Tri-State Area
by the MSG Network. Including his numbers as the 1st assistant to the
legendary Lou Rettino at Union H.S., Fred has participated in 30 playoffs in the last 31 years, and has been a part of
16 State Championships including 7 at Union and 9 at B.C. In the 20 years he
has been the head man at B.C. 40 players have received full
scholarships, 63 players have played in the Ivy or Patriot Leagues,
22 have been first team All-state, and 16 players have gone on
to be captains of their college teams.
Coach Stengel is a graduate
of West Chester State University and he served as a
graduate-assistant at Miami of Ohio where he received his Masters
Degree in Educational Administration. Coach Stengel is married to
his lovely wife Mary Lynne and they have two children James and
Amanda and five grandchildren Jack, Carley, Lola, Patrick, and
Declan. |
